A campaign and petition to Scrap the Tory Tipping Tax has reached over 600 in four days amid concerns over increases in fly-tipping across our communities.
The Conservative controlled Staffordshire County Council decided to impose a tipping charge on some items from the 1st November 2016. Fear that this policy would lead to an increase in fly-tipping led to the creation of a campaign called ‘Scrap the Tory Tipping Tax’. The backbone of the campaign is a petition started by Cannock Chase Councillor Paul Woodhead who has some form in getting County policy overturned.
The petition has already attracted over 600 signatures. Five thousand local signatures are required to force a debate and a vote at the Council. The last petition organised by Paul Woodhead collected over eleven thousand signatures and forced the Council to abandon any plans they had to sell off the County’s green estate.
Paul Woodhead, Green Party Councillor for Hednesford South in Cannock Chase commented;
“Residents across Staffordshire already pay their council tax for an effective household waste disposal service. This is just a cash grabbing exercise by the County Council that will leave the District Councils, and by extension the council tax payers, picking up the bill for cleaning up any increase in fly-tipping. This policy is ill-conceived by out of touch politicians, but people power can force them to overturn their decision.”
Whilst the additional charges currently only relate to plasterboard, tyres, soil and hardcore, the Council has left open the option of increasing the types of waste they will charge for after 18 months.
The Council’s own report acknowledges that the poorest residents will be hit hardest. It states there will be some increase in fly-tipping and they are aware that some resident will complain. They think it’s just a storm in teacup, but if they don’t reverse their decision people power could blow them and their rubbish policy out of office at the next local elections.
